Annual Neighborhood Picnic in August!

Join your neighbors Sunday, August 24th at Meadowlark Park, starting at 5pm. There will be fun events for the kids (Bounce houses! Temporary tattoos! Sidewalk chalk art contest!), music, lawn games, and prize drawings for all MLCA members. You can pay your membership dues at the picnic to be eligible for a prize! Please bring a side dish to share and the Mid-Lakewood Civic Association will provide hot dogs, hamburgers, and all the fixings. Don’t forget your chairs & blankets! All neighbors are welcome! The picnic has become a Zero Waste Event, thanks to the efforts of our South of 6th Sustainable Neighborhood, and the City of Lakewood. Consider bringing your own reusable plate, cup/water bottle & utensils. Also, please consider signing up for a Volunteer shift! We need volunteers to assist with set-up, take-down, food, bounce houses, and more! Volunteer HERE

All neighbors are welcome!!!

MLCA News

MLCA Applies for Grants for Park Improvements

The Lakewood Neighborhood Participation Program (NPP) offers grants of up to $60,000 for qualifying physical improvement projects that residents believe will make a difference in their neighborhood. Thanks to NPP grants that MLCA applied for and received, we’re starting to see tangible improvements in our neighborhood. A new bicycle repair station has been installed at Balsam Pond, and later this year, grant-funded chess tables and grills are expected to be added at Meadowlark Park as part of broader park improvements.

MLCA Civic Committee

The MLCA Civic Committee strives to stay informed of current events and laws that impact the residents of MLCA. The MLCA notifies residents of important changes, meetings, and forums on our website (mid-lakewood.com). Ward 1 meetings are held with City Council members the first Saturday of the month from 9:30am -11am at Holy Shepherd Lutheran Church, 920 Kipling St, Lakewood, CO, 80215.

Letter from the President

We are in the midst of another great year for MLCA! Our Board & Members Meeting in April, jointly held with the South of 6th Sustainability group, was a great success. We heard about South of 6th's project to update Balsam Pond park, which aims to beautify with native plants and introduce additional paths. There's significant enthusiasm for its potential, even in these early phases! We also received important updates from our Civic Committee regarding key Lakewood topics, including development projects and zoning re-writes. Thanks to all who attended!
We've also had several other successful events so far this year:
● The Neighborhood Garage Sale saw many residents selling their wares, and the Community Bike Ride was a fun way to explore the sales
● The Summer Food Trucks at Meadowlark Park have been a great way to enjoy a meal. Join us for the last one on August 12.
● At Coffee with a Cop in June, we learned about crime and safety issues in Lakewood.
● Grant funds are now improving the neighborhood - see nearby article for more!
Please mark your calendar for the Neighborhood Picnic on Sunday August 24th. The MLCA Annual Meeting will be on Thursday October 2nd. We will host a Candidates Forum with candidates for Lakewood City Council Ward 1 in attendance to answer your questions. We will also be voting on the MLCA Board members for next year. All these initiatives are made possible with your financial support. Please send in your dues (or pay on the MLCA website) to help us continue supporting our neighborhood!

South of 6th Sustainability

In 2016, the South of 6th Neighborhood was officially recognized as a Lakewood Sustainable Neighborhood. The South of 6th group hosts opportunities for engagement with your neighbors around all topics relating to conservation, community building, and overall sustainable practices.

South of 6th Sustainable Neighborhood is planning events for the fall including a garden tour, litter clean up, and fruit gleaning. Details will be shared as they are solidified.

Lakewood’s Sustainability Division will pilot yard waste recycling events this fall. Accepted materials will likely include plants, weeds, brush, sticks, and other garden debris—excluding leaves, which can be dropped off for free during the city’s annual leaf recycling, Nov. 15–24.

South of 6th Sustainable Neighborhood has a website! Check it out for upcoming gatherings and events - Southof6th.org.

Email us at Southof6th@gmail.com with questions about planning get-togethers.

Look for more events coming this summer and fall for South of 6th!
